It's one thing for a missionary to dress in the fashion of the local culture to better reach people for Christ. It's another thing to have a small amputation on one of the most sensitive parts of the body to gain admission to a Jewish synagogue. And why do so after such a big deal was made out of needing nothing more than Christ for salvation?

Pastor Levi Matteson preaches from Acts 16 about how the Gospel was contextualized to reach nonbelievers for Christ in the early church. This is a podcast of Evangel Church, Houghton Michigan, Sunday, October 7, 2018.

It's ingrained in the human psyche to think that God, or the gods in the case of the pagan Gentiles, are angry and something must be done to appease them. The Greeks had temples where they made sacrifices, and the Jews kept the law, so when they were all together worshiping in the early church, it was natural to think there was something more to the Gospel.

Pastor Levi Matteson preaches from Acts 15 about the time when the issue of circumcision of new believers came before The Council. This is a podcast of Evangel Church, Houghton Michigan, Sunday, September 30, 2018.

Reality shows typically puts people together who are very different, people who would be unlikely friends in the real world.

The early church had some unlikely pairings also, but the Gospel couldn't be killed, like the invasive plant that is eating the South. The kudzu was first planted on roadside berms to prevent erosion, but it grows a foot a day and comes back stronger with every attempt to kill it.

Pastor Levi Matteson preaches from Acts 12-13:5. This is a podcast of Evangel Church, Houghton Michigan, Sunday, September 16, 2018.
